GenAI Essentials - Building A Research Toolbox Online

ChatGPT started it all less than four years ago. Since then, a lot has changed and evolved. Rather than being fearful, we now ask how GenAI tools and techniques can assist with our research pursuits. Using the research lifecycle as our functional guide, we will consider five essential areas and mention a tool or tools relevant to those areas:

  1. Can they help come up with research ideas (brainstorming)?
  2. Can they help locate relevant information resources (search)?
  3. Can they help analyze and synthesize gathered information (reading)?
  4. Can they help with data analysis and visualization (data processing)?
  5. Can they help producing an end-product (writing)?

Beyond our standard GenAI tools (ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Claude, etc.), there now exist numerous GenAI products that can possibly assist along each step of the research process. We will highlight some of those and consider how we can build a GenAI research toolbox. We will also emphasize how we can and should use these GenAI tools in collaboration with our traditional research information tools.
