Data visualization (the use of charts, graphs, plots, maps, etc.,) to explain and explore data has now become an essential literacy as well as an expected application skill in growing areas of academic and commercial work. Using real-world examples, this learning session provides a foundation for developing a fundamental understanding of data visualization. Using representative data visualizations, we will explore:

  • concepts such as explanatory and exploratory data visualizations
  • principles of effective data visualization and characteristics of ineffective data visualizations
  • accessibility and ethical considerations
